NOTABLE ANIMALS
Some very well-known animals have lived in Scotland:
Greyfriars Bobby
The most famous Scottish animal is a Skye terrier that gained worldwide fame for faithfully standing by the grave of his master for fourteen years. A bronze statue of Bobby stands near the gates of Greyfriars Kirk and visitors are known to touch his nose for luck, although the origin of this tradition is unknown and no special good fortune has been attributed to Bobby.
Wojtek
Wojtek was a Syrian brown bear taken into the care of Polish soldiers during the Second World War. When the troops were in Italy, Wojtek found a role in moving artillery ammunition, leading to his unit adopting a bear carrying an artillery shell as part of their badge design. After the war Wojtek was taken to Edinburgh Zoo, where he was a popular attraction. He died in 1963.
Dolly
Dolly was born in 1996 and was the world’s first successfully cloned mammal from an adult cell. The work was carried out by the Roslin Institute outside Edinburgh. She was put down in 2003 after it was discovered she was suffering from an incurable lung disease. She was given the name of American country and western singer Dolly Parton as the source of her DNA was from a mammary gland.
Maxwell’s Otters
Nature writer Gavin Maxwell’s 1960 book Ring of Bright Water tells of one man’s relationship with nature and, in particular, with otters he looked after. Maxwell lived at Sandaig, in the west Highlands, which he called Camusfearna in the book. After spending time in Iraq, he had brought back an otter which he called Mijbil. It was later identified as belonging to a new sub-species and given the name Lutrogale perspicillata maxwelli. Mijbil was killed by a workman, and another otter that Maxwell looked after died in the fire that destroyed Maxwell’s cottage. He wrote several other books but none had the impact – or sales – of this 1960 classic, which was later made into a film.
